National Defence Academy: The Day Its Foundation Stone Was Laid in 1949
National Defence Academy – Its Journey Began On This Day: October 6, 1949
An important chapter in the history of India’s defence was initiated on the 6th of October 1949. It was on this date, in Khadakwasla, near Pune, where Jawaharlal Nehru, the then prime minister, inaugurated the National Defence Academy (NDA) building. This was the commencement of the establishment of India’s tri-service academy, which later on, was to train the officers of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The Beginning: Foundation Stone Laying

It was just two years after the independence, India was in the need for sturdy institutes to define and develop the nation’s armed forces. This idea certainly was in place during the colonial rule, however, the purpose gained significance after 1947. Khadakwasla was selected for it’s optimal environment for the military which included hills, lakes, and sprawling regions, a perfect combination.
More than a construction milestone, the laying of the cornerstone on the 6th of October 1949 was a promise. A promise to the nation, that a modern armed forces academy, which, under a unified command, modernised, and transformed all three services, was to be built.
From Stone to Institution: Foundation Day in January
Although construction began in 1949, the National Defence Academy Pune did not open until later. On January 16, 1955, the NDA was formally welcomed, making the day NDA Foundation Day, or Raising Day, celebrated annually..
The academy came alive on this date for the first time, training joint sets of cadets. The NDA Khadakwasla Pune has trained thousands of officers on the front lines of wars, peacekeeping missions, and national service.
Why Both Dates Matter

October 6 is the first day of the NDA’s physical journey, and January 16 is the academy’s operational birth. Together, they encapsulate the entirety of the nation’s story in the establishment of one of the world’s most admired tri-service military academies.
The 1949 stone was foundational, and the January 1955 day was pivotal in nurturing generations of military leadership.
