The Bhopal Gas Tragedy

There are events in history that everyone should remember and commemorate. Such an event occurred in India and, once it became known, it changed India forever. Late at night, a deadly gas began leaking from the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal. A methyl isocyanate tank burst, releasing a gas. The gas was deadly, spread quickly, and was undetectable by those sleeping at the time. However, when those people began to awaken, A poison gas filled the air. Their homes and streets filled the gas as it spread quickly.

The Night of the Gas Leak

When people tried to run for their lives, they began to cough and choke. Their eyes burned as if they were on fire from a burning gas. Their panic spread as they tried to get as far away, but many collapsed before getting far. The hospitals filled to capacity, and the doctors and hospitals suffered lack of experience as this was their first time learning how to treat patients suffering from a casete gas leak.

The Bhopal disaster went down in history as one of the worst industrial disasters of all time with thousands dead by morning. Families, homes, and entire neighbourhoods left with gas-inflicted scars that remain on the town to this day.

Why the Tragedy Happened

Key safety systems at the plant were confirmed as non-operational in later reports. Unsafe conditions with gas leak warnings were confirmed as well, but these warnings were all ignored. A weak combination of unsafe legislation, negligence, and maintenance bred a disaster that could have been easily avoided.

The Long Aftermath

The health issues that remained with the survivors of the ’84 disaster were not the only ones the country faced. Health issues affected the next several generations within some families. The surrounding soil and water contamination was left to be a problem for the government to neglect.
