A Historic Beginning on the French Riviera

The festival began on September 20, 1946, in France. It is among the most renowned film festivals in the world and its initial edition was set against the backdrop of the Second World War. As such, the festival was more than just opulence, but an opportunity to heal, foster, and celebrate the impact of cinema.

Why Cannes Was Created

The Cannes Film Festival was being sketched ever since 1939. France wished to compete against the Venice Film Festival. Unfortunately, the festival was held under the rules of fascism. The spread of war delayed everything. In 1946, France was finally able to host the festival, which was set on the French Riviera. This brought together filmmakers and the audience all around the world.

The debut event welcomed films from more than 20 countries which made it one of the first “international” film festivals. The highlights of the film festival was Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Notorious’, Roberto Rossellini’s ‘Rome’, ‘Open City’, and René Clement’s ‘The Battle of the Rails’. These films, more than anything, symbolised the struggles of war and the hope that came with its end.

The location back then was not towering with luxury like it is today. The hotels and streets were on the mend, but the enthusiasm was palpable. People came together to capture and narrate stories through the lens, demonstrating how art can foster unity even at the most challenging times.
