Cricket Highlights
Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 – India vs Pakistan
India’s complete dominance over Pakistan continued on October 5 on the 2023 ICC Women’s World Cup stage. This time, the lopsided contest was played in Colombo, and it was the most followed story in Indian cricket. The contest was never close, and the Indian women corralled their arch rivals, winning 88 runs and finishing the ODI stage of the rivalry with an astounding 12-0.
Batting first, India posted 247, getting bowled out on the very last delivery of the 50 overs. Harleen Deol scored 46, and Richa Ghosh provided a much-needed late-innings flourish with an unvanquished 20-ball 35. Batting was tricky, for the conditions had been overcast and the pitch covered for two full days prior.
Pakistan, in response, started poorly. They lost 3 wickets for 26 runs and it was always going to be a Henrietta Venn day translating to an early bowled out. Sidra Amin scored valiantly but was out in the 43rd over, finishing with a score of 81 (her 2nd best performance in world cups), and leaving Pakistan to a final score of 159. The player of the match award was claimed by young Indian fast bowler Kranti Goud, who in her 10 overs, earned the figures of 20 runs for 3 wickets.
Nevertheless, the match had its share of controversies too. Confusion during the toss, a strange incident where a player was run out, and a 15-minute break due to bugs on the field added to the perplexities of the match. In line with the recent political climate, there was a lack of handshakes between the teams during the toss and after the match, signaling underlying tensions.
“Very important game for all of us, and I’m sure everyone back home is happy as well,” said Captain Harmanpreet Kaur after the match, expressing her joy. With the win, India bagged the top position on the World Cup points table with 4 points and a net run rate of +1.505
India vs West Indies 1st Test – Dominant Victory
India began their home Tests this season in spectacular style, defeating West Indies by an innings and 140 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, completing the match and taking the series to 1-0 in the two-match series on October 4th.
In their first innings, the West Indies scored a mere 162, where Mohammed Siraj (4/40) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/42) opened the attack and were phenomenal, supporting the pace attack perfectly. Justin Greaves scored 32, but the rest of the batting order folded like a house of cards.
India performed exceptionally well, declaring at 448/5, with the scoring being anchored at century mark by KL Rahul (100), Dhruv Jurel (125), and Ravindra Jadeja (104*). The 5th wicket partnership between Jurel and Jadeja which contributed over 200 runs was also noteworthy. Jadeja’s innings was aesthetically pleasing, combining calculated aggression and calmness with 6 fours and 5 sixes.
The West Indies second innings was even worse, folding for 146. Jadeja capped off a great game with 4/54, and Siraj took 3 more. Alick Athanaze’s 38 was the only score that came close to being significant, but it was nowhere near enough to prevent India from winning in 3 days.
No doubt, Jadeja deserved the Player of the Match award for his all-around performance. The century demonstrated his growing importance in the middle order, and his bowling further confirmed that he was still a leading spinner.
India vs West Indies 2nd Test – Ongoing
The second Test in Delhi turned into a batting exhibition for India, with Yashasvi Jaiswal stealing the show. The 23-year-old left-hander batted the entire first day, remaining unbeaten on 173 – a knock that showcased his maturity and technique.
Jaiswal’s innings impressive for his ability to stake his claim to a growing partnership. He built important stands with KL Rahul at the beginning and then with Sai Sudharsan, who had a career-best 87 and fell just short of his first Test century, to steady the innings. The young opener made it to a select group with Sachin Tendulkar in being the only Indians to get seven Test hundreds before turning 24.
Upcoming Cricket Action
The second Test is being played in Delhi where India are looking to seal the series. After, the much awaited Women’s World Cup matches where India take on Australia on October 13 and England on October 20.
Football Highlights (India + World)
Indian Football
The biggest news of the week is the confirmation of the Indian Super League 2025-26 season which has been mired in uncertainty due to a gap in the Master Rights Agreement between the AIFF and FSDL. The season now begins on October 24, 2025.
The Supreme Court’s intervention proved crucial in getting both parties to agree on resuming the league under the existing deal, but the court’s orders have likely not solved the underlying financial issues of cost of organising the league and the central revenue share of ₹18-20 crore per club
Hyderabad FC stated their intention to leave for Delhi soon and to rebrand as Sporting Club Delhi. This adds to the evolving landscape of the league. Inter Kashi has been promoted from the I-League and still waits for the formal integration of the ISL.
Global Football Action
Meanwhile, the India National Team played their most important fixtures of the footballing year as the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers continued. India played Singapore, first away on October 9 and then at home on October 14. India has the least points on the table and sits fourth and needs to win these fixtures to qualify for the Asia Cup as only 1 team from the group will qualify. These next fixtures were important to qualify.
The 2025-26 AIFF Super Cup, had also been formally announced with an exciting draw. The Super Cup planned for the 2025-26 season will have 16 teams split into 4 groups, with the defending ISL champions, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, leading one of the groups. The tournament will see the winner take home a playoff spot for the 2026-27 AFC Champions league Two which will be a great reward for the winner.
